Wave Lines, 2009

Proposal for the Broward County Beach Renourishment Project in Florida.

Inspired by the motion of the waves that sweep along the beaches, Wave Lines creates an environment of light and color in the boundary space between the sea and the man- made structures along the coast. The “pixilated” geometry of the glass block waves translates nature’s forms into a language of our built world.

The movement and configuration of Wave Lines is primarily horizontal responding to the powerful horizontality of the coastline of Broward County and the seascape. It is an environment that can be walked through with the possibility of benches incorporated within the curves for sheltered seating.

While originally I had conceived the work as entirely with sandblasted blocks, in our experiments we found the reflection and lens quality of the blocks can recreate miniature inverted landscapes within each block contributing a richness of intimate experience of the work up close.
