Musee de Lachine in Lachine, Quebec. Steel, concrete.
Created as part of Montreal’s 350th anniversary celebration, the dome is built from stylized beaver belts cut from steel as the Port of Montreal was created to supply the European demand for beaver and millions were killed to supply this damand. The title Passing Song is a Cherokee translation for when the spirit dies, the sound of wind in the trees is the spirit flying free. The dome is acoustic and wind makes sounds within it. At the base is a bas relief cast of the landscape of lakes and rivers where these beavers were found.
