Century City Public Art Opportunity B Concept Description
SPLASH
The artwork SPLASH reflects the dynamism of both Century City and Surrey. This closeup from an image of a wave catches the explosive energy in the moment of impact. The ebullient energy of this image is a metaphor for the possibilities that exist within this building and this community. The choice of water was inspired by the proximity of both the Fraser River and Boundary Bay that define much of the northern and southwestern boundaries of Surrey. Water embraces the community.
The artwork’s transparency is crucial as it makes it possible to see into the building as well as out onto the street through a veil of swirls and froth. We are more aware of the permeability of the façade that reflects the open, energized nature of this place.
The artwork’s three dimensionality created by the perpendicular ‘louvers’ heightens the dynamic presence of the work because our perception of the forms and patterns changes as we move by. Our own movement brings the artwork to life.
